Who we are

Sjakkrating.no displays ratings and results for Norwegian chess players. The service retrieves and presents publicly available data from FIDE. In addition, we process player data from the Norwegian Chess Federation (NSF) under a data processing agreement, where NSF is the data controller.

What we collect

We process the following data:

  • Player data from FIDE (publicly available): name, rating, club affiliation, FIDE ID, birth year, gender and titles.
  • Player data from NSF (under data processing agreement): NSF ID, club affiliation, age group and membership status.
  • Technical data: cookies for language preference.

Why we process data

We process data for the following purposes:

  • Displaying up-to-date rating lists and results.
  • Identifying players via FIDE ID and NSF ID.
  • Storing your preferred language setting.

Legal basis

Our processing of personal data is based on the following grounds:

  • Legitimate interest (GDPR art. 6(1)(f)): Processing publicly available FIDE data to give the chess community a unified overview of Norwegian chess.
  • Data processing agreement (GDPR art. 28): Processing player data from the Norwegian Chess Federation, where NSF is the data controller.
  • Consent (GDPR art. 6(1)(a)): Storing language preferences via cookies.

Sharing with third parties

We do not share personal data with third parties for marketing purposes. Data is stored on secure servers within the EU.

  • We never sell personal data.
  • Historical game data is enriched with data from LumbrasGigabase (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0).

Storage and security

Data is stored in encrypted databases with secure connections within the EU. Access is restricted to authorized personnel. Retention periods vary by data type:

  • FIDE player data: retained as long as the player has an active FIDE profile, or as historical documentation of Norwegian chess.
  • NSF player data: retained in accordance with the data processing agreement with NSF and deleted upon NSF's instruction.
  • Historical game and tournament results: retained permanently as part of chess historical documentation.
  • Technical log data: deleted after 12 months.

Your rights

Sjakkrating.no is itself the data controller for the FIDE data we retrieve and present, and a data processor for NSF data under our agreement with NSF. You have the following rights:

  • Access, rectification and erasure of data processed by Sjakkrating.no — contact us via the About page.
  • Right to object (GDPR art. 21): You may object to our processing of your profile on Sjakkrating.no when the processing is based on legitimate interest.

  • Complaint to the Norwegian Data Protection Authority (Datatilsynet) if you believe processing is not in accordance with regulations.

Minors

FIDE records ratings and tournament results regardless of age, and we display this public information also for under-age chess players. We process data about minors with particular care:

  • We display only birth year, not full date of birth.
  • Parents or guardians may contact us for access, rectification or shielding of a profile.
  • Profiles may, upon request, be hidden from public lists.
